A group of Baylor College of Medicine’s best and brightest, and most compassionate, students and trainees recently were inducted in to two separate medical honor societies – the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha.
Alpha Omega Alpha
Election to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society is an honor signifying a lasting commitment to scholarship, leadership, professionalism and service. A lifelong honor, membership in the society confers recognition for a physician’s dedication to the profession and art of healing. Since the Baylor chapter’s inception in 1949, there have been more than 1,800 members inducted. Members include alumni and faculty in addition to students, residents and fellows.
“Election to AOA requires students to demonstrate their track record of commitment to service, scholarship and leadership as well as to academic excellence. We’re proud of our new 2018 inductees who now join the ranks of the esteemed members of this organization,” said Dr. Daniel Chelius, assistant professor of otolaryngology, who heads the BCM Alpha Omega Alpha Chapter. He noted that new student members continue the longstanding tradition of providing free tutoring to their classmates in need of academic support.

Sixty-five new members were inducted into the society at the March 9 ceremony, including medical students, residents and – for the first year – faculty. The Gold Humanism Honor Society is an international organization that recognizes, supports and promotes the values of humanism and professionalism in medicine. Established in 2002, it is named for Dr. Arnold P. Gold, a child neurologist at Columbia University, and its mission is to work within and beyond medical education to inspire, nurture and sustain lifelong advocates and activists for compassionate patient care.

Gold Humanism Honor Society
Fifty-three new members were inducted into the society at a ceremony held March X, including medical students, residents and fellows. The Gold Humanism Honor Society is an international organization that recognizes, supports and promotes the values of humanism and professionalism in medicine. Established in 2002, it is named for Dr. Arnold P. Gold, a child neurologist at Columbia University, and its mission is to work within and beyond medical education to inspire, nurture and sustain lifelong advocates and activists for compassionate patient care.
Gold Humanism honorees are recommended by their own peers, and a selection of the inductees offer reflections on compassion and humanism at the ceremony. Chapter president Dr. Vandana Shah, assistant professor of medicine, noted that she and other already-practicing healthcare professionals can draw inspiration from those coming behind them.
“These students, residents and fellows exemplify the highest quality in patient-centered medical care,” Shah said. “Their personal reflections allow me to recommit to humanism each year and gives me great hope for the future.”
