Baylor faculty honored for excellence in teaching and education

Baylor College of Medicine faculty members selected as outstanding educators for 2016 were honored at the Medical Education Awards Ceremony held Thursday, May 19, in Baylor’s Cullen Auditorium.“The faculty we honor with these awards are among the best of the best,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of Baylor College of Medicine. “Their efforts in training tomorrow’s leaders in academic medicine will be celebrated this month when we award degrees to our medical school and graduate school students.”

Presidential Awards

Established in 1999, the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education recognizes faculty members who have made long-standing, consistent and highly valued contributions to the educational mission of the College. Recipients become members of the Baylor Society of Presidential Educators and receive a crystal award and $10,000.

“Baylor has been fortunate to have the ongoing support of Corby and Barbara Robertson and their family since Baylor College of Medicine moved to Houston in 1943.  Their family history of support can be seen throughout Baylor beginning with the Cullen Building,” Klotman said.

The 2016 recipients of the Robertson Presidential Award were Judith Campbell, M.D., professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases and associate vice chair of education in the department of pediatrics, and John Coverdale, M.D., M.Ed., professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences and in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy.

The McGovern Teaching Awards were established in 1986 and are determined by second-, third- and fourth-year medical students and based on outstanding teaching of clinical and pre-clinical medical school curriculum. The nominees are then forwarded to the Faculty Awards Committee for approval.

The 2016 recipient of the John P. McGovern Outstanding Teaching Award for the Foundational Sciences was H. Glen Yarneau, B.S., assistant professor of molecular and cellular biology, and the recipient of the John P. McGovern Outstanding Teaching Award for the Clinical Sciences was Andrew Caruso, M.D., assistant professor of medicine.

Recipients were Francis Gannon, M.D., professor of pathology; Joseph Kass, M.D., J.D., associate professor of neurology; Martha Mims, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine; Malford Tyson Pillow, M.D., M.Ed., assistant professor of medicine; and Edward Lee Poythress, M.D., associate professor of medicine.
