Awards recognize Baylor’s top educators

A select group of Baylor faculty members were recognized for their leadership and commitment to education at the annual Education Awards Ceremony, held April 30 in Cullen Auditorium with a reception following in Rayzor Lounge.

“This is a terrific day at Baylor, where we are able to acknowledge the great teachers and educators at our institution,” said President and CEO Dr. Paul Klotman. “We also want to thank Corby and Barbara Robertson for their longtime support of Baylor College of Medicine, including the establishment of the Presidential Award in 1999.”

The Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education is the college’s most prestigious award for educators. It recognizes faculty members who have made stellar and enduring contributions to the educational mission of the college.

The 2014 Presidential Award recipients are Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, the Mary and Gordon Cain Chair and Professor of Medicine and chief of the cardiology section at the DeBakey VA, and Dr. Lorraine Potocki, professor of molecular and human genetics and director of undergraduate medical education in genetics.

Dr. Teri Turner, associate professor of pediatrics and chair of Baylor’s Academy of Distinguished Educators, who presented the awards, called Bozkurt a “triple threat” – a faculty member who excels as a clinician, researcher and educator – and the epitome of a bench to bedside educator.

Turner described Potocki as the “face of genetics education at Baylor” who took it upon herself to grow the genetics curriculum throughout the college.

“Both of these award recipients have a passion not only for their specific fields but for education,” Turner said.

In addition to the Robertson Presidential Award, other awards were presented to recognize outstanding educators at Baylor (below). The day’s events also included the Education Day Symposium on Educational Innovation, an update on the state of medical education at Baylor by Dr. Stephen Greenberg, and an address titled “Leading Change Through Educational Innovation,” by Dr. Alicia Monroe, senior dean of education and senior vice president of academic affairs and faculty development.
