An innovative and low-cost project designed to offer the BCM community insight into College leadership was awarded the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Institutional Advancement Award for Excellence in the Shoestring Communications category.

Claire Bassett and Dr. Paul Klotman
The award was presented to Claire Bassett, vice president of communications and community outreach, who had the idea for the project, and Mariah Almazan of the Office of Graphics Communications, who designed it. Bassett accepted the award from Dr. Paul Klotman, Baylor president, CEO and executive dean, at the AAMC GIA conference in Atlanta in April. Klotman serves as a liaison from the AAMC Council of Deans to the GIA.
The scrapbook of Baylor College of Medicine leadership was in response to a staff satisfaction survey in which the survey respondents indicated they wanted to know more about the College leadership team. But they didn’t want information you might find on a CV, they wanted more personal tidbits.
The scrapbook was presented in a digital flipbook format. College leadership, including Dr. Klotman, Dr. Adam Kuspa, Wayne Keathley and other senior vice presidents, were asked fun and interested questions, such as “Favorite Houston restaurant?” and “The thing that bugs the most” as well as Baylor-specific questions like, “The best part of my job.”
AAMC GIA judges said of the project, “This is a terrific and unexpected response to employee engagement survey results. Well executed. I am not even Baylor staff and I read every profile. I cannot think of anything I would change. I have seen this done in business publications with individuals but the application here is brilliant. Everyone should borrow this idea!”
