Orthopedic surgeons treat Guatemalan patients, gain perspective through volunteer work

Baylor College of Medicine orthopedic surgeons not only treat patients during work hours, but also in their spare time. Three Baylor orthopedic surgeons are among numerous health professionals who share a passion for volunteer work, allowing themselves one week per year to visit Guatemala to treat underserved patients.

Orthopedic surgery has the smallest proportion of female physicians among any medical specialty. Women account for only 7 percent of orthopedic surgeons with approximately 14 percent of orthopedic residents, but a shift is slowly occurring within the field.
