An innovative program aimed at reducing childhood obesity and improving access to healthy foods for patients and the community at large is being launched in San Antonio by Baylor’s newest affiliate, the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.
Baylor students and faculty who perform with the TMC Orchestra have extolled the benefits they receive from being part of the group. It serves as an artistic outlet and stress reliever for many of them. Now they have the opportunity to give back through a new program of the TMC Orchestra called Houston’s Orchestra On Call.
In May, a team of Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital volunteers traveled to Antigua, Guatemala, on a medical mission through the organization Faith in Practice. The team was led by Dr. Nancy Glass, professor of pediatrics – anesthesiology, and included surgeons, physicians, dentists, nurses, a physical therapist, a team administrator and others.
Claire Nguyen, a patient at Baylor’s Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, signed up for the 39-mile, two-day Houston Avon Walk because she wanted to help other breast cancer patients receive life-saving care and treatment. But the walk ended up being even more significant for Nguyen – it occurred the weekend before her last round of chemotherapy.
