Baylor earns high praise in SACSCOC Reaffirmation site visit

Baylor College of Medicine has successfully completed its reaffirmation site visit with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), earning one of the strongest possible outcomes: a recommendation of full compliance with no recommendations.

The decision follows years of preparation and a comprehensive on-site review conducted March 23–26 on Baylor’s Houston and Temple campuses. At the conclusion of the visit, the SACSCOC evaluation team delivered its findings during an exit meeting, commending Baylor for its exceptional organization, institutional effectiveness and community engagement.

Dr. Eli Mizrahi

“This outcome reflects not only careful preparation, but the strength of Baylor’s culture and mission,” said Dr. Eli M. Mizrahi, Baylor’s institutional accreditation liaison and associate dean of clinical and academic affairs. “The site visit confirmed what we know to be true – that Baylor is a high-performing institution with dedicated and engaged faculty, students, staff and members of the Board of Trustees and systems that support continuous improvement.”

What Is SACSCOC and why it matters

SACSCOC is the recognized accrediting body for degree-granting higher education institutions in the U.S. and the world. Accreditation through SACSCOC affirms that an institution meets rigorous standards related to academic quality, governance, financial stability, student achievement and institutional effectiveness. It is essential for institutions to maintain eligibility for federal student financial aid, ensure transferability of academic credits and demonstrate accountability to students, faculty and the community. Institutions are reviewed on a 10-year cycle.

Site visit outcomes

According to feedback shared with Baylor leadership and the Board of Trustees, the SACSCOC committee site visitors were highly impressed with multiple aspects of the visit. The team noted that Baylor’s focused report, submitted in advance to address standards initially identified by the off-site review committee, was well organized and fully substantiated during the visit. They also praised the logistics and structure of meetings held at both campuses, along with the hospitality and professionalism.

Perhaps most telling was the reviewers’ assessment of Baylor’s learning environment. The team described Baylor as “an amazing institution with happy students and dedicated faculty,” and emphasized that the visit was an outstanding experience overall.

A team effort

The successful reaffirmation reflects the efforts of a broad, cross-functional Baylor accreditation organization composed of nearly 200 faculty, staff, trustees and students.

Key leaders in this effort included Michael Cannon, lead for academic operations; Ricky Mercado, director of accreditation and education effectiveness; Michael Rodriguez, accreditation project manager; Dr. Caroline Young, lead for education effectiveness; and Dr. June Zhou, lead for institutional research. Mizrahi served as the institutional point of contact throughout the process.

Board of Trustees’ engagement also played a critical role. Larry Heard, Bill Mearse, Dr. Sarah Foshee and Kelly Hackett met directly with the SACSCOC team during the visit, earning high praise for their preparation and depth of knowledge. According to Baylor leadership, the site visit team leader specifically noted how impressed they were with trustee participation.

What’s next

The findings of this visiting committee represent a preliminary assessment of the institution at this time; final action on the report rests with the SACSCOC Board of Trustees. The SACSCOC Board is scheduled to review Baylor’s reaffirmation materials and render its final decision at its December 2026 meeting in Houston. Based on the site visit team’s recommendation, Baylor leadership is confident in a positive outcome.
