CTeL hosts Taekwondo-inspired curriculum workshop for faculty

In spring 2026, Baylor College of Medicine’s Center for Teaching and eLearning and the Office of Education Effectiveness, invited Taekwondo headmaster Hyunhoon Lee to host a faculty workshop aimed at alternative approaches to curriculum design and active learning.

Inspired by her daughter’s Taekwondo training, Dr. Caroline Young, lead for institutional effectiveness in the Office of Education Effectiveness, wanted to share the principles, strategies and skills associated with the martial art to the Baylor community. Young, and Dr. Sherita Love, CTeL’s founding executive director and assistant professor, welcomed nine faculty members to the workshop.

Faculty learned a basic single punch, double punch combination, a single front snap kick and double punch and front snap kick combination. CTeL compared the movements into workable teaching and curriculum design strategies for participants.

Lee is a seventh degree Dan black belt who founded Leaders Taekwondo in Katy and Cypress. He started training Houston-area students and adults in 2016. His teaching philosophy includes role modeling the correct movement, keeping consistent standards and promoting teamwork and shared responsibility.

Learning is a community practice, and progress should be supported by both peers and mentors, he said.

CTeL offers active learning workshops and other training opportunities year-round. The center is part of Baylor’s Huffington Department of Education, Innovation and Technology.
