BCM Temple hosts first Faculty Awards Ceremony

This February, the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development hosted the inaugural BCM-Temple Faculty Awards Ceremony, recognizing promoted faculty and honoring recipients of the Best Core Clerkship, Best Residency and Best Fellowship awards. In addition, outstanding educators in Foundational Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Residencies and Fellowships were recognized with the distinguished Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Award.

Serving as masters of ceremonies, Dr. Jesus Vallejo, regional dean of the Temple Campus, and Dr. W.C. Culp, Jr., associate dean of faculty affairs and faculty development, reflected on the city of Temple’s 100-year legacy of excellence in medical education and underscored the vital role of faculty in advancing the institution’s educational mission. Undergraduate Medical Education awards were presented by Dr. Steve Charles, associate dean of curriculum, and Graduate Medical Education awards were presented by Dr. Belinda Kohl-Thomas, senior faculty at BCM-Temple and designated institutional official of GME at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center.

Dr. Mostafa Belghasem, associate professor in the Huffington Department of Education, Innovation, and Technology, was named Golden Apple Teacher of the Year in Foundational Sciences, and Dr. Christopher Birkholz, assistant professor, received the award in Clinical Sciences. The Best Core Clerkship Award was presented to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, led by Drs. Birkholz; Lauren Smith, assistant professor; and Krystal Fett, clinical assistant professor.

In Graduate Medical Education, the Best Residency Program Award was presented to the Department of Anesthesiology, led by Dr. Craig Lilie, associate professor, and the Best Fellowship Program Award was awarded to the Division of Gastroenterology, led by Dr. Raymond Duggan. The Golden Apple Teacher of the Year for Residency was awarded to Dr. Sarah Hovland, assistant professor of medicine, and the Golden Apple Teacher of the Year for Fellowship was presented to Dr. Gueorgui Dubrocq, in Pediatrics.
