National Breast Cancer Awareness Month may be in October, but the month of September was filled with community and advocacy events for the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor!
On Sept. 20, the Smith Breast Center participated in the Pink Ribbons Project’s annual Tour de Pink cycling event near Prairie View A&M University. The breast center has participated for the last 11 years, since the event began. This year, more than 30 Baylor faculty, staff and their family and friends rode as part of the Baylor team. Additionally, the breast center hosted an official pit stop on the route, manned by volunteers from the breast center and other Baylor departments. More than 700 riders participated in the event, which raises funds for breast cancer prevention and treatment resources for the underinsured community. Pink Ribbons Project is an important partner in Baylor’s ability to provide care at the Harris Health System’s Smith Clinic and Ben Taub Hospital.
That same day, the Smith Breast Center was honored by Harley’s Angels, an organization of motorcycle enthusiast women who come together to promote breast cancer awareness and education and support research for the prevention and cure of breast cancer. Every year, the organization creates and distributes a calendar of organizations across Houston which share their mission. They sell the proceeds and donate a percentage to various institutions, including Baylor this year. Baylor received a $32,500 check at the event.
The Neiman Marcus Stiletto Strut, the Smith Breast Center’s largest fundraiser of the year, was held Sept. 25 at the Houston Galleria. The event, which included a champagne toast at Neiman Marcus, followed by a strut through the mall and luncheon at the Westin Hotel Ballroom, raised more than $300,000 (and counting) for the Smith Breast Center. In addition to a style show with Neiman’s latest fashions, the event honored Dr. Mothaffar Rimawi with the C. Kent Osborne Award for Medical Excellence. Rimawi is the medical director of the Smith Breast Center. The award is named for Rimawi’s mentor Dr. Kent Osborne, director of the NCI-Comprehensive Designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor.
Stiletto Strut is organized by a dedicated group of advocates who represent the Smith Breast Center Advisory Council.
